The Hen With Silver Egg

Long Long ago there lived an old woman in a town in Arabia. Being all alone, she had to work very hard in order to earn her living.

The old woman saved a little money every week for her rainy days. She knew well that after a few years she would not be able to work at all. At that time, only her savings would save her from hunger and keep her alive.

One day, the old women went to the market to but some articles. There she saw a beautiful hen that was for sale. She paid for it and brought it home. Next morning, the hen laid a silver egg.

You can well imagine woman's surprise to see the silver egg. "If the hen can only be persuaded to lay more eggs everyday, I am sure I will never have to work so hard, "said the woman to herself.

All the day long, the woman kept thinking hard how she could make the hen lay more silver eggs everyday. At last she felt pleased to decide that she must feed the hen several times a day. She said to herself, "If it eats more, it will have to lay more eggs."

So, the woman began to over-feed the poor hen. But the result was very, very alarming. The hen developed indigestion and fell ill. It stopped laying eggs at all.

Even then, the silly woman could not realise the danger. She went on over-feeding the poor animal. And the only result was that the hen died of indigestion leaving the silly old woman's dream of becoming rich unfulfilled.
